Be careful what you wish for…

After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

Obsession is fantastic—the best horror movie I’ve seen in a long time! It’s delightfully unsettling. I was equally uncomfortable and entertained.

I have to give Inde Navarrette her flowers because she swapped between the sweet girl next door and the completely deranged, next-level unhinged psycho stalker with perfection and within single takes! I was absolutely blown away by her performance. I can’t recall being this impressed as of late.

While Obsession is creepy and fun, delivers great performances, and is consistent in tone, I had to doc a star for a few things:

The premise is good, but it raises a lot of questions that don’t get answered:

  • Why doesn’t he just run away?

  • Where are the other people that made wishes?

  • Why are some wishes more literal than others?

I was also disappointed by the language used in the wish… he doesn’t wish for her to become obsessed with him, but that’s what happens, so I wish the script had called for him to use that work, specifically, since another wish that we see is very literal to the words that are spoken. It made me wonder if the wish has more to do with the words spoken when making it or more of the heart of the person making it… it’s a movie, I know, but there was a lot to be explored here!

There’s a wild murder that, while shocking and gross, is very obviously not a human or a dummy, it looked more like a bloody stick, and that made me laugh and totally took me out of the experience.

With that said, it’s a solid movie that fans of the genre will love.

Obsession is now playing in theaters.
