Freakier Friday

⭐⭐⭐+1/2

Expectation: 🤣🤩

Reality: 🤣

Freakier Friday has everything you want in a sequel. I didn’t find it quite as funny as Freaky Friday, but it’s still very funny. It has the perfect amount of callbacks to the original while also keeping things fresh and new, and some easter eggs from other films.

An October 3rd wedding?! Give me all the nostalgia.

Costumes are amazing. Script is solid. Acting is top tier.

Jamie Lee Curtis (reprising her role of Tess) acts circles around everyone else—as she should, she has the most experience—so it was great to have her paired with Lindsey Lohan (reprising her role of Anna) for most of the film since they are such a fun duo. That said, Julia Butters (who plays Anna’s daughter, Harper) and Sophia Hammons (who plays Harper’s step-sister-to-be, Lily) hold their own and give great performances.

The main reason I knocked off a star and a half is that the film requires too much suspension of disbelief. Body-switching is already an outlandish tale, so going in I know I have to just accept that people really believe these are the same women and girls they’ve always known. But things like standing on stage and whispering in front of a hot mic and not being heard by the audience took me out of it.

Mother-daughter and sister dynamics are the focus, so we don’t get a whole lot of the boys. I always enjoy watching Chad Michael Murray 😍. Manny Jacinto (who plays Lily’s father, and Anna’s fiancé, Eric) is a scene stealer in all the best ways. Bravo, sir. 👏🏽👏🏽 Unfortunately, there isn’t any room in the story for Anna’s little brother (reprised by Ryan Malgarini, who showed up to deliver one line).

The story is sweet, but didn’t really punch me in the feels like I like to be punched.

From a critical standpoint, I wanted a bit more, but from a social and millennial standpoint, Freakier Friday is a great choice for a night out with the girls. It’s so much fun, and I’ll totally see it again.
